Bug: Fedora 8 Test 2 Boot

Fedora 8 Test 2 freezes when I try to boot it. This happens both with the install DVD and once I have it installed. I need to try to “post a report”, but until I figure out how, here is the output:

Linux Plug and Play Support v0.97 (c) Adam Belay
pnp: PnP ACPI init
ACPI: bus type pnp registered
pnp: PnP ACPI: found 11 devices
ACPI: ACPI bus type pnp unregistered
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new interface driver hub
usbcore: registered new device driver usb
PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
PCI: If a device doesn’t work, try “pci=routeirq”. If it helps, post a report

For now, I am trying out Ubuntu. I am kind of dead in the water with Fedora right now unless I go back to Fedora 6 or maybe 7.

Update: Here is the bug — 316811

Actually, I did not do a good job searching for a bug.  My bug was marked duplicate and here is the actual bug: 299301

Video Driver

Applies To: Acer Aspire 9300 Laptop

The Laptop has an nVidia GeForce Go 6100 video card.

Manual Install

The driver was downloaded from this link:
nVidia website

The problem with the manual install is that you manually have to reinstall each time you update the kernel. If you update the kernel with yum and you have installed the video driver with yum, yum will install the driver in the new kernel for you.

Using Yum

Make sure to configure yum with freshrpms repository.

You can run the following command to see which packages are available:

yum list | grep nvidia

This is what it gave me:

nvidia-x11-drv.x86_64 1.0.9746-1 freshrpms

To install, run the following:

yum install nvidia-x11-drv

Component Specs Working In Linux
Screen 17″ WXGA Works great at 1440×900@50hz
Video Card nVidia GeForce Go 6100 Works by installing nvidia driver rpm from freshrpms repository;
had one small problem with Beryl and NVidia combination.
Installing Nvidia Driver
DVD/CD DVD & CD Burner CD works fine — burned both CD and DVD from K3b
Touchpad “Scroll wheel” does not work, but the touchpad works fine as a regular mouse.
Camera Not Sure
Modem Not Sure Haven’t tried to use it
Ethernet nVidia Corporation MCP51 Ethernet Controller Works fine
Wireless Atheros AR5005G 802.11abg Works by installing madwifi rpm from freshrpms repository
Audio nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio Works fine — had a little hickup with a kernel upgrade. Forced change to Alsa drivers and had to adjust volume for Alsa.

Installing Beryl

Beryl is the eye-candy effects for X-Windows. I have heard it compared to Windows’ Aero. It allows windows to shake like jello as you drag them and display previews of windows as you hover over them on the task bar.

Installing

Used yum to install: beryl-gnome

Note: This is a meta-package that will install the necessary packages.

Resolving Problems

I had to remove previously installed nvidia driver libraries:
[skp@localhost lib64]$ ls lib*9631
libGLcore.so.1.0.9631 libnvidia-cfg.so.1.0.9631 libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.9631
libGL.so.1.0.9631 libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.9631

Starting Automatically

I created this script: /usr/local/bin/start-beryl
#!/bin/sh
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/nvidia/libGL.so.1 beryl-manager

I had to make it executable:
chmod a+x start-beryl

From the command-line, I ran gnome-session-properties and:

  • on Startup Programs
  • clicked add — /usr/local/bin/start-beryl

Sound

These notes are somewhat old, but I wanted to post them anyway to avoid losing them.

Upgraded to Kernel Version 2.6.19-1.2895.fc6
As a result, my sound quit working.

Using yum — installed:

  • alsa-oss
  • alsa-oss-devel
  • alsa-tools
  • alsamixergui
